How Tafsir is performed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you ask what is the best method of tafs\u00eer, the answer is that the best way is to explain the Qur’\u00e2n through the Qur’\u00e2n. What the Qur’\u00e2n alludes to at one place is described at the other, and what it says in brief on one occasion is elaborated upon at the other. But if this does not help you, you should turn to the Sunnah, because the Sunnah explains and elucidates the Qur’\u00e2n. Im\u00e2m Ab\u00fb ‘Abdull\u00e2h Muhammad Ibn Idr\u00ees ash-Sh\u00e2fi’\u00ee has said: “All that the Prophet, peace be upon him, has said is what he has derived from the Qur’\u00e2n.” All\u00e2h has said:<\/p>\n

With clear signs and Books (We sent the Messengers). And We have (also) sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Dhikr [reminder and the advice (i.e. the Qur\u2019\u0101n)], that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought. [S\u016brat An-Nahl: 16:44]\n

And We have not sent down the Book (the Qur\u2019\u0101n) to you (O Muhammad), except that you may explain clearly to them those things in which they differ, and (as) guidance and mercy for a folk who believe… [S\u016brat An-Nahl: 16:64]\n

How Tafsir is performed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This is why the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:
\nKnow that I have been given the Qur’\u00e2n and something like it. [Ahmad, Musnad, Vol. IV 131; Ab\u00fb D\u00e2w\u00fbd, Sunan, Sunnah, 5]\nNamely the Sunnah. The Sunnah too has been given to him through wahy as the Qur’\u00e2n, except that it has not been recited to him as the Qur’\u00e2n. Im\u00e2m ash-Sh\u00e2fi’\u00ee and other scholars have advanced several arguments in support of this point, but this is not the place to quote them. [For discussion see ash-Sh\u00e2fi`\u00ee, ar-Ris\u00e2lah]\nTo understand the Qur’\u00e2n, you should first look at the Qur’\u00e2n itself. If that does not help, then turn to the Sunnah.
\nThe Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam sent Mu’\u00e2dh radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhu to Yemen and asked him: “How will you judge the cases (that come to you)?” He replied: “I will judge according to the Book of All\u00e2h.” “But if you do not get anything there, what will you do?”, the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam asked. He said: “I will refer to the Sunnah of the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam.” “But if you do not get it even there, what will you do?”, the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam asked again. He replied: “I will exercise my judgment.” Hearing this the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam patted Mu’\u00e2dh radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhu on the shoulder and said: “Praise be to All\u00e2h who has guided the Messenger of His Messenger to what pleases His Messenger.<\/p>\n

How Tafsir is performed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This had\u00eeth has been reported in the Musnad and Sunan collections of had\u00eeth with a good isn\u00e2d. [Ahmad, Musnad V:230, 236, 242; ad-D\u00e2rim\u00ee, Sunan, Muqaddimah, 30; at- Tirmidh\u00ee, Sunan, Ahk\u00e2m, 3; Ab\u00fb D\u00e2w\u00fbd, Sunan, Adhiyah, 11.]\nWhen you do not get any help from the Qur’\u00e2n or the Sunnah, turn to the words of the companions.
\nFor they know the Qur’\u00e2n better: they have witnessed its revelation and passed through the situations in which it was revealed:
\nand know it and understand it fully. This is particularly true of the scholars and leaders such as the four righteous caliphs
\nand ‘Abdull\u00e2h ibn Mas’\u00fbd. Im\u00e2m Ab\u00fb Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jar\u00eer at-Tabar\u00ee reports: Ab\u00fb Kurayb narrated to us,
\nsaying: J\u00e2bir ibn N\u00fbh informed us that: al-A’mash informed us from Ab\u00fb Duh\u00e2: from Masr\u00fbq that ‘Abdull\u00e2h ibn Mas’\u00fbd said:
\n“By the one beside whom there none have the right to be worshipped, there is no verse in the Qur’\u00e2n about
\nwhich I do not know in whose case and at what place was it revealed. If I were aware that anyone knew the Qur’\u00e2n more than me,
\nand I could reach him, I would certainly have gone to see him.” [Ibn al-Ath\u00eer, J\u00e2mi’ al- Us\u00fbl f\u00ee Ah\u00e2d\u00eeth ar-Ras\u00fbl, 1392\/1972, Vol. IX p. 48.]\nAl-A’mash has also reported through Ab\u00fb W\u00e2`il that Ibn Mas’\u00fbd said: “When anyone of us learned ten verses of the Qur’\u00e2n,
\nhe did not proceed further unless he had known what they meant and what action they demanded.”<\/p>\n

How Tafsir is performed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another great scholar is ‘Abdull\u00e2h ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2, the nephew of the Prophet sallall\u00e2hu ‘alayhi wa sallam
\nand the commentator of the Qur’\u00e2n. He attained that stature by the Prophet’s prayer: “O All\u00e2h! Give him knowledge of Isl\u00e2m
\nand teach him the meaning of the Qur’\u00e2n.” [Ahmad, Musnad, Vol. 1: 266, 314, 328, 335]. Muhammad ibn Bashsh\u00e2r narrated to us,
\nthat Wak\u00ee` informed us, that Sufy\u00e2n informed us from al-A’mash: from Musim (ibn Sab\u00eeh Ab\u00ee Duh\u00e2) from Masr\u00fbq:
\nthat ‘Abdull\u00e2h ibn Mas’\u00fbd radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2 said: “What a good interpreter of the Qur’\u00e2n Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s is!”
\nIbn Jar\u00eer has also reported this had\u00eeth through Yahy\u00e2 ibn D\u00e2w\u00fbd, from Ish\u00e2q al-Azraq, from Sufy\u00e2n, from al-A’mash,
\nfrom Muslim ibn Sab\u00eeh Ab\u00ee Duh\u00e2, from al-Masr\u00fbq with slightly different words: “What a good interpreter Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s is of the Qur’\u00e2n!”
\nHe has also reported the same words through Bundar, from Ja’far ibn ‘Awn from al-A’mash. These words are,
\ntherefore, the actual words of Ibn Mas’\u00fbd radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2 which he said about Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2.
\nIbn Mas’\u00fbd radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2 died, most probably, in 33 A.H. Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2 lived for thirty-six years after him and added a lot to the treasury of Isl\u00e2mic knowledge.<\/p>\n

How Tafsir is performed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Al-A’mash quotes from Ab\u00fb W\u00e2’il that Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhum\u00e2 was appointed leader of the Hajj by ‘Al\u00ee radiall\u00e2hu ‘anhu; he delivered a sermon and read from S\u00fbrah al- Baqarah, or S\u00fbrah an-N\u00fbr according to another report, and explained it in such a way that had the Romans, Turks and the Dalamites heard it, they would have embraced Isl\u00e2m. This is the reason why most of what Ism\u00e2’\u00eel ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahm\u00e2n Sudd\u00ee has written in tafs\u00eer consists of the explanations of these two scholars: Ibn Mas’\u00fbd and Ibn ‘Abb\u00e2s radiall\u00e2hu’anhum.
\nThey were written by: Sheikh-ul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah.<\/p>\n
